OPPOSITION politician J.B. Jeyaretnam is set to make a case in the High Court for a by-election to be held for the seat left empty by the death of Jurong GRC MP Ong Chit Chung. Mr Jeyaretnam, a lawyer, will argue the case next month for Mr Sri S. Vadivel Kounder, who had made a High Court application on the issue.

He described Mr Vadivel as a resident of the GRC and someone he has known for years from the Workers' Party that he used to lead.

Mr Jeyaretnam said in a press statement yesterday the application aims to get the High Court to declare that Article 49 (1) of the Constitution is 'mandatory in its requirement that the vacancy in Parliament for a Member from Jurong GRC be filled by a by-election for his seat and the by-election should be held within three months from the seat becoming vacant'
